What are pronunciation card games?- Pronunciation card games are an enjoyable and effective resource for ESL teachers to use in teaching pronunciation. The instructions for eleven different games follow this introduction, and the cards for playing the games are easily made by copying the included sheets of originals. Although the pages can be cut from the book, it is recommended tha the book be kept intact as the original source for making sets of card. How are pronunciation card games organized?- There are two main types of cards. Sets 1 - 12 are for practicing individual sounds (segmentals). Each set contains a collection of pictures, (each picture is called suit) representing different words. These words all contain potentially confusing pairs of sounds (minimal pairs). A minimal pair of words contains only one segmental difference. Sets 13 - 16 are used for practicing stress, a suprasegmental aspect of pronunciation. (See the appendix for additional information about stress.) In these games, the students are challenged to hear and produce three levels of word stress-primary, secondary, and weak - as well as major stress in a phrase or sentence.
