People Express is a reader and pronunciation program for literacy and ESL. It includes short, survival-related stories and stories that deal with Canadian cultural content. A variety of activities follow each story, including cloze, picture/word match, sequencing, word order, and functionalexercises. Each unit also includes at least one chant which reinforces or complements the vocabulary and thematic content of the stories. Phonics exercises follow each chant. Students practise pronunciation, listen for a specific sound or set of sounds and then scan for words in the chants with similarsounds, form minimal pairs, count syllables, or choose between minimal pairs in sentences, for example. Some chants may also be taught or presented as songs, providing students with further practice in stress patterns, intonation, and rhythm in the language. All chants and songs are recorded onthe accompanying cassette tape.
